Teaching Approach
- Playfulness Over Perfection
I strive to create a space where students feel comfortable making silly sounds, trying things out for the first time, and bringing their whole authentic selves. Lessons are not about getting it right, right away — they are about trying different approaches and seeing what works. And hopefully having some fun in the process! - Singer-Selected Repertoire
While I am happy to suggest songs I think would be good in your voice, I want students to lead on repertoire selection, so that what we’re working on can feel as valuable to your growth as an artist as possible. - Building Your Inner Coach
We’re only together for an hour a week at most! So part of what we will build together is your ability to give yourself actionable feedback (both affirmative and constructive) when you are practicing by yourself. You are always welcome to audio or video record your lesson so you can revisit our warm-ups or the way we work through repertoire together.
Elements of Singing We Can Work On
Voice training is going to be most effective when we have a shared understanding of what we’re working on and what you as a student are most interested in focusing on. Here are some of the possible elements we can focus on during our lesson time.
- Coordination: How do we build strength and flexibility in the interconnected system of breath, registration, and resonance?
- Articulation & Diction: How do we use our tongue, lips, teeth, and palate to make clear vowels and consonants so an audience can understand our words?
- Ear Training & Music Reading: How do we get more comfortable learning new music?
- Interpretation: How do we unpack the text and meaning, and build a unique and compelling interpretation of a piece?
- Listening: How do we critically observe a performer we want to emulate to understand how they accomplish the vocal and performance elements we admire?
- Performance: How do we build our confidence performing in front of an audience?
- Practice Structures: How do we define our vocal goals and create a practice plan that supports incremental work toward those goals?
